Halloween Costume Safety Tips

Everyone wants to have a happy and safe halloween. The last thing you want is for your child to be hurt on Halloween. The excitement of the holiday often makes children forget to be careful. With a little planning in advance and some good safety rules, Halloween can be fun for you and your child.
Prior to Halloween;
- Try on costumes to be sure of fit so that your child won't trip on a "too long" costume.
- Buy fresh flashlight batteries.
- Buy reflective tape if children's costumes don't have reflectors.
- Teach your children "stop, drop and roll" in case their clothing comes in contact with open flames, such as a jack o'lantern. We all hope that never happens, but better prepared than not!
- Discuss the rules of behaviour while trick or treating.
On Halloween, Before the Kids Go Out
- Make sure they eat a nutritious meal before going out. With full tummies, they'll be less tempted to eat candy before bringing it home for inspection.
- If you're not going along, make sure your children have their phone number and/or address on them for emergency use.
- Remind them to stay away from open flames (ie; jack o'lanterns) and practice stop, drop and roll.
While Trick or Treating
- Only trick or treat at homes with a porch light on.
- Do not go into unfamiliar neighborhoods without an adult
- Use sidewalks. Never cut across yards or use alleys.
- Never EVER enter a stranger's home or car to get a treat.
- If wearing a mask, lift or remove it when crossing the street.
- NO treats are to be eaten until they have been checked by an adult at home.
Stay safe.... and have fun!
